Launching Health & Dignity: WASH Training and Menstrual Hygiene Sensitization at St. Francis Primary School
Date: 20th November 2025
Location: St. Francis Primary School-Mpigi
A new chapter in school health and hygiene began at St. Francis Primary School, with the official launch of the Three Star Approach to WASH in Schools and the formation of the school’s first WASH Club.
More Than Just Infrastructure
While the Three Star framework focuses on improving water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, the training went beyond bricks and taps. In a pivotal session, Madam Alaisha Ndagire sensitised students on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM)—a topic often shrouded in silence. She openly discussed:
The importance of using safe sanitary products
Proper disposal methods
The need for privacy, dignity, and support for menstruating girls
This conversation is a crucial step toward creating an inclusive and supportive school environment where every student feels respected and able to participate fully in learning.
What is the Three-Star Approach?
The Three Star Approach, adapted from UNICEF’s WASH in Schools guide, helps schools progressively improve their hygiene and sanitation standards:
🌟 One Star: Daily routines like supervised handwashing with soap and clean toilets.
🌟🌟 Two Star: Enhanced facilities, hygiene education, and MHM support.
🌟🌟🌟 Three Star: Meeting and maintaining national WASH standards.
Student-Led Change Through the WASH Club
The newly formed WASH Club, comprised of enthusiastic student leaders, will be at the heart of sustaining these new practices. They are already planning awareness campaigns, monitoring hygiene stations, and advocating for better facilities.
Looking Ahead
This training marks the beginning of St. Francis Primary’s journey from awareness to action. With continued effort from students, staff, and the community, the school is on a clear path toward earning its stars—and fostering a culture of health, dignity, and confidence for all.
